Windows 10 Can’t Play DVD: Watching Discs When Windows Has No Built-In DVD Player

You put a film into the drive, double-click it, and nothing plays. Windows Media Player shows an error, or Windows simply opens the disc’s folder of files. When Windows 10 can’t play DVD discs, slot online it can look as though the drive is broken.

Usually it is not. Windows 10 does not include built-in DVD video playback. Microsoft removed it after Windows 7 because the decoding technology required licence fees and most people had moved to streaming.

The drive can still read discs, copy files, and install software. It is only video DVD playback that needs extra software.

The confusion is understandable, because Windows 7 played DVDs out of the box and many people expect Windows 10 to do the same.

What Usually Triggers It

DVDs fail to play for these reasons:

  • Windows 10 has no DVD playback component installed by default.
  • The drive itself is not detected or cannot read the disc.
  • The disc is scratched, dirty, or recorded in an unusual format.
  • The disc is from a different region than the drive is set to.

Blu-ray discs need a Blu-ray drive and separate player software, even on PCs with DVD support.

First Steps to Try

Confirm the drive works and choose a player.

  1. Open This PC and check that the DVD drive is listed and shows the disc’s name.
  2. Open the disc in File Explorer. A VIDEO_TS folder means it is a normal video DVD.
  3. Install a free player such as VLC Media Player from its official website.
  4. Open VLC, choose Media > Open Disc, select DVD, and press Play.
  5. Alternatively, buy Microsoft’s official “Windows DVD Player” app from the Microsoft Store.

Some PCs that shipped with Windows 7 or 8 and were upgraded receive Windows DVD Player free, so check the Store before buying.

If the Problem Continues

Check the disc and drive.

  1. Clean the disc gently from the centre outwards with a soft cloth.
  2. Try another DVD to see whether the problem is with one disc.
  3. If the player reports a region error, check the drive’s region in its properties. Region changes are limited, often to five.
  4. Update the DVD drive driver through Device Manager.
  5. Try an external USB DVD drive if the internal one cannot read discs.

A Word of Caution

Download player software only from official sources, since fake DVD players often contain adware. Avoid changing the drive region repeatedly, as it can lock permanently.

The Bottom Line

Windows 10 cannot play DVDs without extra software. Install VLC or Windows DVD Player, check the disc, and confirm the drive works.

For a library of discs, copying your own DVDs to files for personal use, where local law allows, also saves wear on the drive and the discs.
