Windows 10 OneDrive Not Syncing Files: Getting the Cloud Icon Back to a Green Tick

The cloud icon in the taskbar shows circling arrows that never stop, or a red cross. With Windows 10 OneDrive not syncing files, changes made on the PC do not reach your other judolbet88 devices.

OneDrive compares the files in its folder with those in the cloud and transfers the differences. One problem file can hold up everything behind it.

The icon’s menu usually explains what is wrong, so that is the first place to look.

What Usually Triggers It

Sync stops for these reasons:

  • The cloud storage is full.
  • A file name contains characters that are not allowed, or the path is too long.
  • Sync is paused, often automatically on battery saver or a metered connection.
  • The OneDrive app needs updating, signing in again, or resetting.

A single file that is open in another program can also block the queue for a time.

Start With These Basic Checks

Read OneDrive’s own messages.

  1. Click the OneDrive cloud icon near the clock. If it is hidden, click the small arrow first.
  2. Read any message at the top of the panel, such as “Sync is paused” or “Your OneDrive is full.”
  3. Select Help & Settings and choose Resume syncing if it is paused.
  4. Select “View sync problems” if offered, and rename or move the listed files.
  5. Close programs that may have files open, then wait a few minutes.

Names containing characters such as a colon, asterisk, or question mark cannot be synced and need to be renamed.

Going a Step Further

Refresh the connection.

  1. Check your storage at the OneDrive website and delete or move files if it is full.
  2. In OneDrive’s Settings, open the Account tab, select “Unlink this PC,” then sign in again and choose the same folder.
  3. Reset the app. Press Windows + R, type %localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\onedrive.exe /reset, and press Enter. The icon disappears and returns within a minute or two.
  4. If it does not return, run %localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\onedrive.exe from the same box.
  5. Install pending Windows updates.

A reset makes OneDrive rescan all files, which takes time but does not delete anything.

Protect Your Data First

Before unlinking or resetting, copy any files that have not yet uploaded to a folder outside OneDrive, so they are safe whatever happens. Files marked with a cloud icon exist only online, and files with a green tick are stored on the PC.

The Bottom Line

OneDrive that will not sync is usually paused, full, or blocked by one awkward file. The icon’s panel names the issue in most cases. Resuming sync, renaming the problem file, or resetting the app restores normal service.
